What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease or periodontal disease happens when your gums become infected or inflamed over time. This can occur as a result of poor oral hygiene, but also often involves genetic factors. Gum disease can affect not just the health of your gums, but of your teeth and jaw, and even make a significant impact on your overall health and wellness.

What Are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?

During the early stages, you may not notice any symptoms at all. However, as it progresses, gum disease may cause bleeding gums, loose teeth, loss of gum tissue, and discomfort. Eventually, if left untreated, gum disease can cause you to lose teeth, take damage to your jaw, and experience a marked decline in your overall health.

How Do We Treat Gum Disease?

We typically treat gum disease using a procedure called scaling and root planing. Also known as a “deep cleaning” (to distinguish it from a regular dental cleaning), scaling and root planing involves cleaning out bacteria that have grown into the gums around the base of your teeth, as well as removing plaque and tartar that have built up on your roots over time. If you have gum disease, we typically suggest coming in for a deep cleaning every three months so that we can prevent further spread or even reverse the effects of the disease.
